"I began working with Uxbridge College, as a volunteer in the Electronic Engineering Section, and this experience assisted me in obtaining my current post as a Lecturer. The College has allowed me to progress my teaching career, by providing me with excellent opportunities for development. The mentoring scheme provided by the College to support new employees was significant in settling me into my new role.
Consideration for employees is important at Uxbridge College; this is evident through the support and encouragement to achieve further qualifications, alongside the continual training. My colleagues are very knowledgeable in their area of expertise, and they pro-actively support and help each other. Staff Profile: Paul Salvietto
Lecturer in Motor Vehicle - Engineering
"I started working in the motor vehicle industry when I was 15 years old and began my teaching career when I was a mere young man of 47!
I was introduced to the College on the recommendation of a friend who teaches here. I relished the opportunity the College gave me to re-train as a vocational teacher, and my colleagues supported me and helped me overcome the challenges involved. Having done this in later life, I realise there is nothing you can’t achieve and I draw on this to encourage, inspire and support the young people I teach.
One of the biggest thrills I get is seeing the distance travelled by the students. This has helped them to achieve personal goals and some of our students then go on to gain employment in our industry and take their first steps towards building their own careers."
Staff Profile: Peter Smith
Lecturer in Plumbing - Engineering
"I have found that in my short time teaching Plumbing at Uxbridge College it has been a busy, sometimes challenging but mostly rewarding experience. The Plumbing section is growing and huge investment is now going into developing a level 3 Plumbing/Gas work course that will be up and running for the new academic year 2015/16.
Uxbridge College has a bright, modern, vibrant and positive feel to it. The buildings are open plan, spacious and bright with well-equipped classrooms. The learners are encouraged to participate in the many sports facilities offered by the College and this provides a healthy, active and fun environment within the shared areas. The staff work as a team to address challenging issues that young people in Further Education sometimes present.
I would recommend Uxbridge College to anyone thinking about a career in Further Education."
Staff Profile: Shelley Cawley
Family Support Worker - Children’s Centre
"I have worked at Uxbridge College for over 9 years and have had the opportunity to work across three separate departments. The College has helped me learn and gain skills to enable me to progress and has supported me in my career.
I have most recently moved into the Uxbridge College Children’s Centre where I now work as a Family Support Worker, assisting families, with children aged 5 and under, with many different issues, including financial worries, safeguarding, and helping to deal with post-natal depression. We also assist them in attending the Children’s Centre and provide any parenting advice they may need.
I have the opportunity to work with external departments across the London Borough of Hillingdon, including Social Services and the NHS. This is an extremely rewarding job and I have been able to use all the knowledge the College has given me over the last 9 years to help families in the community.
Uxbridge College is a supportive employer that encourages staff to continue their development. They have provided opportunities for additional training to enable me to increase my skills and have the confidence to do my job well."
Staff Profile: Liam Plumridge
Lecturer in Travel and Tourism - Sport, Travel and Public Services
"I joined Uxbridge College in September 2013 after working in the travel and tourism industry. I was immediately impressed that Uxbridge College looked to employ staff without teacher training, and valued industry experience.
The College has supported me to obtain my teacher training qualification, and my teacher training tutor has been outstanding. I am part of a very supportive team of colleagues from a range of industry backgrounds. I know that my manager is approachable and will assist me in order to provide the best experience for our learners."
