Working Men’s College (WM College)

Working Men’s College (WM College), was founded in 1854 and was associated with the Cooperative Movement and the Christian Socialists, stemming from the same tradition that led later to the establishment of the Worker’s Educational Association. The Working Women’s College founded 10 years later in 1864 finally merged with WMC in 1967. Early supporters of both have included F D Maurice, John Stuart Mill, Tom Hughes, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Ruskin, Ford Maddox Brown, Walter de la Mare and Octavia Hill. Originally based in Red Lion Street, we have been in this listed building in Camden Town since 1905.

WM College is a learner-centred college which is dedicated to widening access to education for all, providing opportunities for lifelong learning and improving employment prospects for the diverse range of London adults who are unable to study full time and who need to fit their studies in alongside work and family commitments.

We have grown rapidly in recent years but are still small enough to know all our learners and to respond to their individual needs. WM College was designated as a Specialist Designated Institution (SDI) under the 1992 Further Education Act.

Curriculum

WM College aims to ensure a balance of provision that meets the needs of all learners, whether they are learners engaging with first steps foundation level provision, those who are seeking to develop and improve their skills for employment or those who are looking for personal development and an opportunity to engage with and enjoy learning.

We provide a wide range of Arts-based courses alongside a programme of English and maths at all levels including GCSE.  We offer ESOL provision at a range of levels which enable the learners to progress as their language skills improve.

Our courses are designed for adults to help them progress and develop their career by expanding and enriching their skills and experience. Our commitment to ensuring they achieve their personal goals and aspirations remains our highest priority and our past students certainly agree with this.

Courses are available for adults aged 19 and over only. We can only accept students aged 18 and over on the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design.
