Teacher of Geography

City of Portsmouth College has been formed by the merger of Portsmouth College and Highbury College and was formally constituted on 1 August 2021.

The newly formed College will give students of all ages even greater flexibility with their programmes and access to dedicated subject facilities at the different campus locations. The joint organisation will also expand a uniquely flexible curriculum offer within the city of Portsmouth, comprising A Levels, vocational diplomas, apprenticeships and higher education qualifications.

Over the coming academic year, Portsmouth College and Highbury College will retain their individual identities and will be unveiling the new City of Portsmouth College brand in September 2022. Candidates wishing to apply for vacancies should continue to do so via the relevant college website.

Job Title:             Teacher of Geography

Hours:                 14 hours per week, 52 weeks per year

Contract:             Permanent

Location:             Tangier Road

Salary:                 £10,407.85 - £15,970.52  (FTE £26,019.62 - £39,926.31

We are looking for an innovative and creative teacher of Geography to contribute to the Humanities area. This area currently offers a range of A levels including Law, History, Politics, Religious Studies, Classical Civilisation and Geography and a BTEC in Applied Law. The successful candidate should show the ability to engage with students and staff to produce a successful and dynamic classroom environment. An enthusiasm for effectively and imaginatively teaching and assessing is an essential priority and you must be willing to actively use hand-held technology to help facilitate student learning both inside and outside the classroom. 


You will need to be able to transfer your passion for the geography to a group of learners to national standards enabling them to achieve their A Level qualification. Set work, assess and grade submissions in line with awarding body criteria and requirements. Own your course and look for opportunities to develop the learning experience and introduce additional learning interventions.

  • A good relevant Honours degree
  • A relevant teaching qualification; currently undertaking one or willing to do so
  • No teaching qualification is required but you must be willing to work towards and gain relevant teaching qualifications which will be sponsored and supported by the college.
  • Proven track record of successful teaching of 14–19-year-olds (this could be through teaching practice if the candidate is an NQT or on a PGCE)
  • Ability to teach A-level Geography
  • Experience of teaching preferably in Geography would be an advantage but not essential. 
  • Be flexible and self-motivated with a dedication to student achievement and quality.
