Newham Sixth Form College (NewVIc) is one of London’s largest sixth form colleges. It is a vibrant centre for sixth form education with the great majority of students coming from our local schools in Newham. We have a vacancy for a full-time teacher of construction & the built environment based within the engineering & construction programme team at NewVIc. Your main involvement will be in the delivery of a range of general construction programmes from level 2 through to advanced level, including teaching on building, land and quantity surveying as well as construction technology. An appropriate candidate may also be able to contribute to our engineering programmes.
Programmes within the engineering and construction team are popular with NewVIc students with courses regularly over-subscribed. Achievement rates are high on all programmes. The team is firmly committed to reflective and innovative practice – it has for example, growing good practice in e-learning.
You will be working in a team of experienced and successful specialists who offer a range of full-time courses. In particular, we are offering the level 3 extended diploma.
Programmes in the engineering and construction team include:
- Level 3 extended diploma in construction and the built environment
- Level 2 extended certificate in engineering
- Level 3 extended diploma electrical/electronic engineering
- Level 3 extended diploma mechanical engineering
At NewVIc we strongly believe in team working and see this as one of the reasons for our success. The team have high retention and achievement rates on most programmes.
You will work within the engineering & construction programme team whose manager has responsibility for leadership on all aspects relating to student learning, teaching, tutoring, staffing and other resources, assessment and curriculum development. Managers will give you guidance and support in your work, while the programme team manager will take specific responsibility for your probationary review and appraisal.
To teach at NewVIc you will be committed to supporting students in achieving success. You will work well with 16-19 year olds and contribute to a student-centred environment both inside and outside of the classroom.
As a teacher, you will be innovative and reflective, with a genuine interest in young people and how they learn.
All full time teachers may be responsible for a tutor group.

Candidates are longlisted on the basis of their written application and the extent to which they meet the standard criteria. You are advised to ensure that you use your supporting statement to indicate the extent to which you meet each of the criteria in the person specification below.
The selection day usually starts with a briefing on the post and the college. You will also be asked to complete a short written activity, a short interview with a student panel and micro-teaching.
Longlisted applicants for teaching posts are usually asked to carry out an observed micro-teaching session of 20 minutes, typically with a group of 6-8 students. (We are happy to make a reasonable number of photocopies of any materials you wish to give to students.) Candidates will be informed of the topic for the micro-teaching at the point of being invited in for the selection day.
Following these activities, the selection panel decides which candidates to take through to interview, usually on the afternoon of the same day.
