The Fashion Retail Academy (FRA) (Ofsted outstanding) is a unique, industry led academy, established in 2005 to meet the talent needs of the fashion retail industry.

The FRA offers a range of exclusive fashion courses with unparalleled industry involvement to ensure our students gain the skills and contacts needed to successfully progress to employment. Supported by and working closely with around 120 brands, from popular high street names to digital giants and luxury brands, we offer a wide range of specialist fashion Diploma, Degree and Short courses and Apprenticeships, many of these exclusive to the FRA with start dates throughout the year.

The FRA’s Board of Governors, including the Principal and CEO, has overall responsibility for the Academy, with strategic responsibilities that include:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Supporting and holding the Principal and CEO to account for the educational performance of the Academy and its students’ progress;
  •  Overseeing the financial performance of the Academy, ensuring excellent value for money; and
  • The safety and wellbeing of its staff and students.

As the FRA is a Registered Charity, its Governors are also the charity trustees. Additionally, being a Company Limited by Guarantee, its Governors are the Directors of the company.

The Board comprises a mix of educationalists, senior executives from industry and other professionals. We are currently seeking new Governors. At this time, we are particularly keen to recruit individuals with:

Professional expertise in:

  •  Audit and Risk Management
  •  Education - including individuals with expertise in one or more area of FE, HE, apprenticeships, vocational and non-accredited provision
  • Proven leadership experience, to help guide the Academy in a business-like manner through the current and future challenges;
  • Passion and enthusiasm to serve;
  • The commitment and flexibility to be able to devote sufficient time to this important role.

The commitment that we expect of a Governor is normally to attend four full Board meetings each year, along with occasional additional special purpose meetings, to join one of the Board’s three subcommittees (each of which typically meets once per term) and to attend occasional events to engage with FRA staff and students, which helps Governors to be connected and informed and to gain further from the experience.

These non-executive roles are unremunerated, but they present a great opportunity to ‘give something back’, the excitement that comes from engaging with emerging talent, and networking opportunities with other retailers and education specialists. Having just agreed our ambition and strategy for the next five years, now is a particularly exciting time to get on board.

The FRA is committed to safeguarding the welfare of our learners. The successful applicant(s) will therefore be required to complete DBS checks.

Black and Minority groups are currently underrepresented and applications from individuals in these groups would be particularly welcomed.

Closing date: 31st January 2021
