Since the primary role of this job is to assist in teaching students, you should have the ability to learn specific and practical techniques and apply this knowledge to solve technical problems. You will also need to have excellent record keeping skills and good time management skills in other to work on several different projects at the same time.

Apart from the personal qualifications that will be vital in this position, some educational criteria will also prove advantageous, this will include-

  • A degree in a relevant field
  • Good IT skills such as Microsoft word and excel.
  • Any previous work experience as a technician will also prove helpful.

Taking up this job means you will constantly play the “behind the scenes” role in the institution you work with. You will play an important role in the day to day activities of any research laboratory you are assigned to. You will also be actively involved in tutoring and mentoring students for educational excellence. Some of your core responsibilities will include-

Ensuring that practical teaching areas and workshops are properly managed and maintained.

  • Assisting students with research projects.
  • Maintaining and repairing machines and equipment found in the laboratory.
  • Supporting the work of teachers in classes and laboratory sessions and giving technical advice to staff and students.
  • Liaising with academic staff to discuss timetables, equipment requirements, and work plans.
  • Writing reports, reviews, and summaries.
  • Staying up to date with relevant and scientific developments.
  • Dealing with general queries, assisting with the setup, and cleaning of apparatus.
  • Take on further roles as this job may demand.

These responsibilities may vary over time, however as you progress you will take on more responsibility as well as supervision and management of the staff of the laboratory.
