What is further education?

From basic skills to postgraduate degrees, further education (FE) colleges provide high-quality technical and professional education and training for young people, adults and employers. They prepare over three million students with valuable employability skills, helping to develop their career opportunities.

Why become a teacher or lecturer in further education?

Teaching in FE is fulfilling and rewarding – it’s about transforming a student’s life. Colleges employ 137,000 full time equivalent staff, of which 72,000 are teaching staff. There are lots of opportunities for flexibility, whether you want to work part-time or full-time, and if you want to progress in your future career.

How to become an FE teacher?

What makes the sector special is that so many of our teachers have learnt their trade in industry, providing real life experiences to your students. Lots of colleges provide on the job training and you’ll gain a recognised qualification when you complete it.

Get paid to teach - and then get qualified in-house

Many colleges see experienced industrial personnel as key recruits to teach and support students achieve their academic goals. This means they are often prepared to let you teach without a teaching qualification and then train in-house while still being paid on the job.
