Oaklands has a proud heritage in providing transformational education for over a century tracing its roots back one hundred years when it opened its doors to both men and women on an equal basis. From its very start it has believed passionately in the power and beauty of the curious mind and has stretched and supported its students in equal measure so that they have been enabled to fulfil their ambitions and dreams.
Oaklands remains true to those proud origins, while being a contemporary college – always looking forward and fostering innovation. It is a community of learners and is proud to be a partner in its students’ journeys, ensuring each and every one of its students is treated and respected as an individual - Oaklands expects the best for and from its students.
Over 1,500 full and part-time courses are delivered across its three campuses, to over 7,500 students, covering a wide spectrum of subjects, sectors and industries. The College is nationally renowned for its sports academies where sporting and academic excellence are driven with equal importance and where many of its alumni go on to compete globally and/or continue their sport and education in top international universities, including in the US – six of its former students having represented Great Britain in the Tokyo Olympics and Para-Olympics. It is also renowned for many other ‘Centres of Excellence’ working closely with industry, such as Construction, Creative Industries, Technology and robotics, Engineering (including working with Airbus on their innovative apprenticeships programme to develop engineers of the future), Manufacturing, as well as Special Education Needs provision.
Under the leadership of its recently appointed Principal and CEO, Andrew Slade, and through its new and dynamic strategic plan, Oaklands will develop further ‘Centres of Excellence’, including building on its recognised strengths in Teacher Training, ESOL provision, Hospitality, Animal Management and Horticulture and other areas. It is currently the destination of choice for many learners who go on to further study, Higher Education or into sustainable employment. It is committed to continuing to increase the number of people of all ages who can access the rated as good provision offered for 16-18 year olds, adults, Special educational Needs learners and those people completing higher level study, as seen in a recent Ofsted inspection. The College has an excellent reputation and is recognised internationally and nationally, as a significant regional provider and in offering excellent educational opportunities locally for the communities and businesses it serves.
The College is also investing in the future of its students and staff with an ambitious £62 million investment in its estate, which has already delivered two state of the art facilities – it’s residential accommodation (Homestead) for its elite sports students and a recently launched teaching facility (the Evolution Centre) which includes 42 purpose built classrooms. It is now embarking on the next phase of this development, with support from employers, students, staff and key stakeholders, which includes a new Sports Pavilion, as well as a 3,000 square metre industry-informed Construction Centre which will provide training across existing and new construction disciplines, including the latest sustainable modern construction methods.
Known for its strong values and ethical approach, it aims to be a national beacon of best practice in sustainability & the green agenda, mental health & wellbeing as well as ensuring it acts as a SMART-College, living and leading on the digital skills, knowledge and teaching and learning environment required for the future. It is Oaklands 100 Year anniversary and it remains true to its origins of being an inclusive and welcoming community for learning, providing life-enhancing education and opportunities for its students so that they excel and progress, and as an active partner with its communities, stakeholders and the businesses it serves.
Culturally, we have regular feedback sessions for employees called Staff Voice that are held with the Principal and key Senior Managers and offers the opportunity for employees to discuss day to day issues around the college and provides them with insights into future plans for the college.
We hold an Investors in People Award and pride ourselves on our strong ethos of inclusion and diversity. Our college community offers opportunities to become a meaningful part of the wider community through enrichment and extra-curricular activities.
