School Sergeant Major - Full Time

Independent Military School - DunblaneStart Date: ImmediateContract: Full-timeQualification Requirement:Not a teaching role

      About the School

We are working with a unique independent military boarding school in Dunblane, funded by the Ministry of Defence, serving children of UK Armed Forces personnel. This school is known for its strong military heritage, ceremonial traditions, and a deeply supportive community environment. The campus spans 45 acres of countryside and offers exceptional facilities for academic, pastoral, and extracurricular development.

The school maintains a strong ceremonial ethos including drill, piping, drumming, dancing, and regular Parade Sundays, traditions central to its identity.

      The Role

We are seeking a highly organised, disciplined, and motivational School Sergeant Major to lead the ceremonial and military aspects of school life. This is a non-teaching position and plays a critical role in maintaining the school's traditions, supporting pupils in leadership and discipline, and upholding the values and standards that define the school's military heritage.

This role sits at the heart of the school's ceremonial programme and is integral to maintaining its national reputation for excellence in drill, parades, and formal events.

      Key Responsibilities

      • Lead, organise, and oversee the school's ceremonial activities, including Parade Sundays and major school events.
      • Train and mentor pupils in drill, discipline, bearing, and ceremonial conduct.
      • Work closely with staff overseeing the pipe band, drumming, and Highland dancing teams.
      • Uphold and promote the school's military ethos and heritage in daily school life.
      • Coordinate with senior leadership to support the smooth running of events, inspections, and ceremonial duties.
      • Serve as a visible role model for discipline, respect, leadership, and tradition.
      • Assist with pastoral and community responsibilities typical of a boarding school environment.
      • Ensure health, safety, and safeguarding standards are upheld at all times.

      Requirements

      • Strong military or cadet force background (e.g., NCO, WO2/WO1, Drill Instructor, or similar experience).
      • Demonstrable experience in drill, ceremonial duties, or military leadership.
      • Excellent communication, authority, and interpersonal skills.
      • Ability to motivate and guide young people in both discipline and confidence.
      • Strong organisational skills and comfort working in a structured, tradition-driven environment.
      • Willingness to support the wider boarding and extracurricular life of the school.

      Why This School?

      • A deeply supportive "family" community built around shared values, discipline, and service.
      • Stunning 45-acre campus with outstanding facilities.
      • A nationally recognised ceremonial programme that performs across the UK and internationally.
      • Stable funding and strong institutional backing through the Ministry of Defence.
